I'm in the process of doing a final round of edits on a novel I hope to start sending out in the fall (yep, when the kiddos are in school!) While researching agents, publishers, etc. I came across the following article about self-publishing that I found fascinating.

Now, my plan is to query agents in the fall. Land my dream agent on the first try, and sell my novel for a 6 figure advance...(stop laughing. It could happen!) But, if things don't work out that way, maybe this is another option.

All in all, an interesting time to be a writer.

New Poems

The Summer 2011 issue of Poetry Quarterly is out and four of my poems are included. As a lot of you know, I just graduated with my M.A. in English. My final project was a book-length collection of poetry about adopting my daughter, Grace, who is autistic and developmentally delayed.

I consider myself more of a fiction writer than a poet; however, I had been trying to tell Grace's story for years. When I stumbled into poetry, it seemed like the perfect form for her story. With poetry, I felt like I could capture snapshots of our lives together without the need to wrap up everything in a nice neat package at the end. Life with Grace is difficult and wonderful; exhausting and exhilarating. The one thing it isn't is tidy. I think poetry respects that.

The poems are available online. Click on "Open Publication" and turn to page 5 and you'll find my work. To zoom in, just click on the page.

Where did the years go?

I can't believe summer break is almost over. As usual, I've been too busy to post (summer with the kids limits my time), but I wanted to quickly share this video I made for Steve's birthday, which was yesterday. Yay! Now he can't tease me about being older than he is!

A lot of you have been with us through some of our rough times & through our adoption journeys. I thought you might like seeing how the kids have grown & how our family has come together.

I hope you enjoy it!
